QuakeCon... I got fragged and went to heaven
Quake IIIToday I am back from QuakeCon held down in Dallas, Texas. I drove down in a car pool composed of six of people total and with a bunch of computer equipment split up between a Suzuki, Subaru WRX, and my humble Mercury Villager. The on-the-road time was around 22 hours not counting the stops along the way which basically makes it almost a two day affair to get there. Left on Sunday, got there Monday, and volunteered for night shift security duty Tuesday (I have a staff badge :-). We checked in on Wednesday and the gaming went on from Thursday to Sunday at noon when everyone took down their setup and it was time to go home. I had a fantastic time! There is this saying that I saw at a Harley Davidson shop once "the best part of any journey is the people you meet along the way." I couldn't agree more because this convention was so much more to me than just a LAN party. I did far more socializing than gaming and that is why the whole experience is amazing. I was flirting with every hot girl I came upon and it was incredibly fun to try different approaches because it doesn't matter, you probably won't get to see them again. I got a few kisses out of it :-)

There were around 2,500 people in the BYOC, a couple thousand miles of CAT 5, and a $350,000 Cisco Catalyst 6500 back-end switch to connect the one hundred switch boxes. Product boothes, cute babes, food, drinking, bawls, people, noise, music, lights, events... dizzying... wonderful. I suggest that everyone I know who are into LAN gaming to go to QuakeCon at least once because it is the ultimate LAN party period. It wasn't a perfectly uneventful trip back though; we ran into a few problems, for instance the Suzuki's engine died in Arkansas! So it ended up like the Simpson's episode where Homer plays Tetris with me trying to fit all that crap into my car... thank goodness I brought a van. Anyway, we had to leave the poor car but we all piled into two vehicles and made it to the meet-up in Virginia where they had some people help them to get the rest of the way home so everyone got back safely. Home is comfortable, but I still wish I was back in Texas... After a party like that, I know I'm going to have to go back again.

I have pictures!! :-)
