What does it mean to be an artist? There are music artists, painters, thespians, and even software engineers. Well I guess you have to create something new to be an artist. But then again, nothing new eh? More accurately, an artist has a passion for trying to perfect and attain unattainable perfection. The reward for this work is highly variable because the artist’s money supply correlates to their patrons appreciation for the art created. Or rather, in a perfect world it would correlate, but sadly many people can appreciate an art created by an artist without returning the favor in monetary value.
At this moment I’d like to turn the attention to an open source software artist, Daniel Robbins. Mr. Robbins was, until recently, Gentoo Linux’s Chief Software Architect. He founded Gentoo for the purpose of helping people and sharing ideas and creating a highly flexible and therefore more free (as in choices) Linux distro. However his is a case of the programmer turned artist which is the road down which open source software development leads the programmer. Now Mr. Robbins has turned into a starving artist who must temporarily leave his art in pursuit of a job that pays a wage to live off of. Mr. Robbins is one of many heroes in this new world of technical altruism. It is my hope that one day I will find a way to efficiently direct capital to productive starving artists such as him. What open source needs to rescue it is capitalism; for truly wealth is created by those who make others wealthy, and trade is a win-win game. It’s halfway there with the likes of Red Hat, IBM, Novel, VA Software, etc. But there is a missing piece…
